Rented a car for 10 days in Iceland. Car was in excellent conditions, service was fast and owner was always available when we had a situation, I feel confortable recommending this company to future costumers and as a costumer that had to use the insurance, I also feel very satisfied with the results and speed of the process

So, we went to Iceland for a week long trip, starting on 07 April. We were a big group, 8 people, planning to rent 2 separate cars and tents to camp (yes, yes, winter time and all that, but we survived :D). what draw my attention to FairCar was it's good rental price (way lower than many others) and the possibility to rent tents and mats together with the vehicle.

As I read lots of nightmare stories about rental companies in Iceland, I decided to check about the company. There were mixed reviews, some saying that they were victims of a scam, other saying that they had a spectacular time with the company. We decided to give it a shot. We rented one Hyundai i10 and one Peugeot 308 SW, the cheapest combination to carry all of our stuff, (3 tents, 8 Mats, 8 sleeping bags, 8 bags full of clothes, 23kg of food and a camping stove (Which I would recommend FairCar to make available on rental too) ... We are students, so we were on a tight budget, brought our food all the way from Germany ... hahaha. Both cars were fully insured, as we were pretty much afraid of the nightmare stories.

When we arrived at the airport late at night, there was a woman with the rental company logo waiting for us. Here is where our great experience with the company starts. She took us to the office and was very friendly overall. we chatted for a while, as we were an odd group (too big, all students and all that). There, we were informed that the Peugeot wasn't available (can't remember the reason), so they upgraded us to a VW Caddy, which is considerably bigger than the Peugeot, for free. They also informed us that the camping cards we purchased along with the rental would be no good, because all of the campsites that accepted them were closed, so they refunded the value for us :D. We signed papers, were handed keys, tents and mats and went to inspect the car. Every detail was marked on the paper, aside from one that we noticed. We informed the woman about it and she marked the paper. Everything went smooth, so we got the cars and went to our roadtrip.

We left their office at midnight, but couldn't camp the first night, because it was windy, and with windy I'm being kind. Appocalyptical is more like it. It was strong, something like 20 m/s ... that is the moment we understood everything said about wind ripping car's doors off (no, we lost no doors, as we were extra cautious with them :D). The second day we noticed that one of the tents and 2 of the mats were missing (their mistake for not checking, and our mistake for not checking), but we couldn't go back to take it, as we were in Akureyiri already, which is something like 600km distant from Keflavik. Next day we called them to report the missing tent and there was no problem, they would refund us \o/

We rode something close to 2600km during our stay, and the cars never showed any sign of failure or problem. I can't remember how many kilometers the Caddy had already had at the time, but our I10 had something close to 100.000km. Very well kept though, both aesthetically and mechanically (yes, we checked, as the majority of us are Mechanical Engineering students).

We handed the cars back at their office for inspection (we requested the papers confirming that the car was OK) and there was no problem on inspection. It took something like 40 minutes for both cars to be inspected and we had no surprise. Everything went smooth as it should. They them offered to drive us to the airport, where we would wait some time until our flight back. Now, 4 months later, There had been no additional charges or surprises in our credit cards. With all that in mind, we can assure: They are the best :D

If I ever come back to Iceland for a second run, I will sure to look for FairCar for a set of wheels (and I expect not to be on a budget again this time ... hahaha)

P.S.: I edited the post to add the part about the friendliness of the womam with whom we rented

P.S.S: I edited it again because I forgot to add the reason for my edition

i rent the car with full coverage insurance on 30/3/2017. the car was quite old with about 200k km mileage. the car skidded on the 1/4/2017 and caused damaged to both front tyres with some
scratches. i called the company to send a new car but i have to pay new rent for the new car that will coat me 300++ euros and 900euros for the cost to send the car from the office to me. I have rented car from other well-known rental company, when we involved in accident or the car broke down, they will replace the car 1:1. What Fair Car did to me was ridiculous and unacceptable. today already 26/4/2017 and the case is not resolved yet as i didn't receive any update regarding the cost of repair as they emailed me that cdw maximum excess is limit to 2900 euros only. and they seems dont like to reply an email.

i rated fair car iceland poorly on trust pilot and they challenged the fact that this was a real transaction. i have the proof in the emails sent from fair car rental to myself with this reference number. reference # is 19974 for a vw caddy campervan that was rented from april 28, 2017- may 10 2017. unfortunately, i read the many poor reviews of fair car iceland after i had booked the car. fair car rental doesn't have a review system from past customers on their own website anymore because of all of the negative reviews they were receiving. i have been renting cars internationally for the past 20 years and i knew to do the check in and check out inspections in person with a fair representative, receive copies of the inspection paperwork and take photos of the car before and after of any issues. we purchased the maximum amount of insurance that fair car offered in their office when we picked up the car ('sand & ash' as well as as their 'zero excess damage waiver' which reduced our responsibility to zero according to the rental contract). we received a small rock chip on the passenger side windscreen with no spreading. fair car insisted the whole windscreen needed to replaced. as we had purchased fair car's 'zero excess damage waiver' i was not worried, we filled out the claim paperwork with the insurance company who agreed to pay fair car directly once they submitted the invoices for the new windscreen with administration costs. this insurance company as well as myself requested fair car via email to submit this information in order for the payment to be made on a daily basis. fair car refused to send this required information and over a month after the rental was done, and they charged my credit card $1200 u.s dollars for a new windscreen. the insurance company will not reimburse me for any damages until this information is sent by fair car rental. it would take less than a minute for fair car to send this information but they simply aren't returning emails. if you are going to rent a car in iceland please read other online reviews on fair car as they have done the same to me to many many other customers. save yourself a lot of headache and wasted time on the phone and rent with another company in iceland.

The collection was slightly late from the airport, but the guy explained that he had been helping out a driver who had an accident. To say sorry, he offered us the compressive insurance for free. The car was spotless and excellent condition. Can't fault the service and would use them next time we need a vehicle.

We rented a car that was too small to accommodate our luggage and the staff happily kept a piece of luggage in their storage for the 4 days of our rental free of charge. We also got a free upgrade to a bigger car... a Nissan Micra. Careful, the small cars are very small. But everything went well and the staff were helpful and kind. At the moment of booking it was also the cheapest option.

Just came from my third trip to Iceland and my third time with FairCar and always a great experience.
They are always waiting for me in the arrival hall when I arrive and provide me with great vehicles.
This time I came in the winter and they had studded winter tires on my car, it was very important as roads was covered with ice and snow.
Looking forward for my next Icelandic trip, I am totally in love with Iceland.

NOTE FAIRCAR IS TRYING VERY HARD TO REMOVE HONEST REVIEWS THEY DO NOT LIKE
first the battery was dead, the stove did not work and then they charged us for damages we did not put on the car. When we had a flat tire fixed, watching the process they claimed we allowed the garage to substitute an inferior tire-- not the case. They refused to inspect it when we returned it and low and behold two weeks later they ask for $2,000. of damages. When Visa determined their claim was non- compliant they used a collection agency to go after their claim of damages, with no indication of course that they fixed anything - even though they were not our damages. -SCROLL DOWN A BIT ---THERE ARE MANY WITH SIMILAR EXPERIENCES

We have rent a small car for five days to drive the South Coast.
The daily price was low and competitive, but the service provided was poor and they have tried to scam us.
They forgot picking us up from the airport and the car was in bad conditions, namely with unsafe winter tires.
They charged us extra 80 euros, because they insisted we had to provide a credit card only, which had to be in the name of the main driver and no other traveller.
When we returned the car, we took photos showing that it was in the same conditions, but after 3 weeks they claimed we had to pay an insane budget for new damages we are not responsible for and that we can not even see in their photos.
We had rented cars in many places before, but this company is desonest and not recommended.

(03/07/2017)This car rental company is very cheap in comparison with the other companies located in Keflavik. Someone picks you up in the airport at your flight arrival time and drives you back to the airport after drop off of the car. We rent a small car, very simple and basic but which ran well. We were a bit worried about the tires which seemed a little deflated but they survived to our 14 days trip.
I paid the booking of the card with my visa card Premier so I did not have to add any insurance. However, I was very surprised at the picking of the car when the girl ask me a deposit of 1000 euros by card. My card was not configured for such a deposit neither the on of my friend. We were on the middle of the night in the middle of the ocean. The girl proposes to take their insurance (100 euros) and so I had only 50 euros to depose with my card. I accepted because I had no choice if I wanted a car for my holidays.
At the term of our trip, we planned to drop off the car at maximum 10 pm so we asked for a reservation of the car until 10 pm. We were a bit early at the agency ( 8pm ). The agency was closed, the emergency phone never answered. Someone called me back (with a private number so that I could not call him back another time) to explain me that nobody will be there until 10 pm (it was not a maximal time to dropp off the car but a precise time. We were lucky that our plane was at 1 am...).
So this car rental is cheap but the service is cheap also. I would not really recommend this car rental. By reading the other comments I am quite afraid because indeed, the girl insisted to drop us at the airport immediatly after giving her the keys of the car. The car had no damages and we washed it before drop off so I hop we will not have bad surprises.

update 07/07/2017
We had a bad surprise. I saw on my bank account a payment of 57.7 euros from the car rental company. I had no mail, no text, nothing from the company to explain this payment. When I send them an email, they answered me that it was because we did not fill the fuel tank before the drop off. Of course, we did it, we had the receipt from the gas station. I am waiting for their answer.

update 26/07/2017
After contacting directly the gas station concerning the receipt on which no address is indicated except the headquarters of the company, the company contact has directly confirmed by email that we had put fuel at 5 pm the day of the drop off 4 km from the drop off location. Thus, FairCar has admitted their error and refund us all the additional fees for the "missing" fuel.
I hope we will not have additional bad surprises in the future

Conclusion: do not hesitate to contest their decisions if you know that you are right!
Finally I would not recommend FairCar except for people who want low price but should be very careful (ask questions at the check in and make them write their answers, take pictures of your car before and after, take the receipt from the gas stations and do not hesitate to contact them for their support)

I rented a car at FairCar Iceland - Car Rental in Iceland for 3 days.
The car was an old car and had already many scratches all over. I delivered the car back on the day and time I should. During my rental period I did not have any accidents or something else which would cause any damage to the car. They got the car and the keys but did not provide me any documents although I asked for it.
After I got back home and 2 weeks passed, the rental car company FairCar e-mailed me claiming that there were additional scratches on the car caused by me. They even sent some pictures showing the scratches. I replied that I did not cause any scratches or similar things and added that claiming such an issue after 2 weeks is not legal and logical.
In spite of my refusal of causing such scratches, they charged my credit card for USD 1.166,87. The scratch on the pictures they sent was so small that it would not cost that much.
I asked the company for the new pictures of the car after the repair. However the company resists sending them, which makes me think that probably there are no such scratches and no related repairs.
I CANNOT and DO NOT RECOMMEND FairCar Iceland - Car Rental in Iceland to anybody as their attitude toward and treatment of the customers CANNOT BE TRUSTED. I would never use this company for future car rentals. Better stay away from this company to avoid future losses.
