It's the little things that make a big difference; crew remembering your name and cabin number after the first day, knowing immediately what you'd like to drink or eat, great willingness to help with sometimes difficult gangway arrangements and being generally happy, smiley and upbeat. It's the people who make a Fred Olsen cruise a great experience!

Delicious food, excellent service, wonderful ports of call, a real feel of Christmas about the ship and a spectacular view of the fireworks over Madeira on New Years Eve. We did it last year too and have also booked for next year.

It is always a pleasure to sail with Fred Olsen, the waiters, cabin steward and bar staff are always happy to see you, they are are respectful and friendly and make us feel we matter.

I have never sailed with Fred Olsen before but will definitely be sailing with them again. All staff/crew couldn't have been nicer, everyone went out of their way to make sure my experience aboard was a happy one. In fact its one of the happiest cruise I've ever had.

I have rated this cruise as a four star rating with a heavy heart. the vast majority of the experience was first class but there was one major exception, the location of our cabin. Cabin No234 is located at the back of the ship and as such was subject to a lot of noise and a strong smell of fuel whenever we entered the cabin. this cruise travels a lot during the night and through many locks. the constant changing of engine tome and volume created a situation where our sleep was constantly disturbed. When entering locks the ship bumped the sides and the engine noised was constantly changing resulting in a very poor nights sleep. When i asked if there was an alternative cabin i was told that the ship was full. To make matters even more upsetting there were 8 travel agents on board to learn / understand what a River cruise is all about. We overheard their introduction to the ship and they were told that the fare paying passengers had paid a lot of money for the trip and they should keep a low profile, if they are on a freebie then why do they not get the less advantageous cabins and the fare paying ones the better sited cabins.

As for the rest of the experience it was first class the standard of food was excellent and the staff in all areas were brilliant. the standard of accommodation and the public areas were spotless and well maintained.

After taking about 20 Fred Olsen Ocean Cruises, the River Cruise is an entirely different product.

we were really looking forward to getting away for Christmas ,but because of the weather we missed our first port which we did want to visit, the other thing was the meals did not seem up to standard the food was too salty, we did not get any Haggis,the staff were great but it did not have the wow factor disappointed

The cruise director (Bruno) appears to have been thrown in at the deep end with this role, as he was quite unprepared and unsuitable for it. We ended-up not bothering to go to his future destination briefings/talks, as they were just too painful to listen to.

Excellent service throughout.... all crew...captain, cruise director Amalia, dining, lounge, cabins friendly, professional and hardworking. Hotel manager seemed less friendly than other crew.

Excellent, friendly professional crew in all areas.... captain, dining, cabin, entertainment director Amalia.
Although we did think the hotel manager, Linda, was not as friendly as some.

The experience was excellent all round, especialy the embarkation and disembarkation which due to current health conditions was the first time e had to se the system. We have trvelled many times before and felt that the service and staff were all up to the very high standards we expected. If our health holds up we will certainly travel again.

I would absolutely recommend Fred Olsen's Black Watch. It is the friendliest of ships and the entire crew from the Captain to the entire staff could not have been more helpful and pleasant.

It's been a while since I last did a "Fred" cruise (pre refurbishment in fact) and I was pleased to find the friendly warm atmosphere on Black Watch was still there. Fred Olsen has managed to retain the atmosphere of "real cruising" and not contributed to the massive "floating blocks of flats" that many people today think of as cruising. That's not for me!

The entertainment was top notch and varied. (I still can't quite fathom how the Show Company dancers and singers managed not to drop anyone when performing on a rolling ship!) What a splendid troupe of young entertainers they are. I particularly enjoyed the activity "Singing for Fun" with them.

The cuisine and choice of food was, as ever, excellent. Though I felt the seating in Brigadoon was rather cramped at lunch times. This in no way spoiled the excellent quality of food available - I just felt a bit sorry for the staff.

All in all really relaxing holiday.

There were problems caused by a change of flights by Fred Olsen which at one time I was invoiced £200. At one stage we were flying from Manchester and returning to Heathrow !!. We also received 16 ATTOL certificates which made us very unsure of why and was there changes that we didn’t know about !!.
