Matt Koorey

I joined Matt's 1:1 coaching at the end of June 2018, what convinced me to join Matt was he is a coach with a completely different approach to training and racing to any other coach I've worked with in the past. He has a no BS approach and says it like it is which is really refreshing. He has a vast knowledge on anything triathlon related, and I’ve not met anyone with his passion for the sport, amazing to see even after so many years in the sport. Matt will invests in you like no other coach as long as you are 100% committed with no excuses. Since joining Matt I have seen my performances improve with each race, and most importantly I have stayed healthy without any injuries. I could not recommend Matt and his coaching approach more highly.

Matt Koorey is not for the feint hearted, but his approach reflects the exceptionally high standards that he holds of himself as well as the consistent quality of investment that he expects from, and works tirelessly to draw out of, his athletes. Matt can sometimes be raw, but his crew understand that it comes from a passion for excellence and progress borne of methodical attention to process; where he is demanding they respect and appreciate the wealth of experience that underlies the feedback. That aside, Matt is incredibly generous with sharing his knowledge and personal anecdotes, acquired over 3 decades spent racing and/or coaching in the high-performance multi-sport arena, and his intensity is driven by the responsibility he feels for his role in ensuring his athletes achieve success beyond their expectations. He works with his athletes on a holistic level so that their athletic endeavours are optimised in consideration of lifestyle and environmental constraints. Matt works with professional, elite and age-group athletes and, from my observation, asks only that the athletes that he takes on board have the same commitment to their own success (whatever that looks like for them) as he does to helping them to achieve it and that seems like a fair trade to me.

Fortunate enough to have partnered with Matt for over 2.5 years, during this time he reviewed and rectified all areas of my approach to Triathlon. There wasn’t much I was doing right and he dug in and started getting results pretty quickly. Three podiums in races in the first year and an Ironman 70.3 world championship qualification in the second. Couldn’t recommend him or his approach highly enough.

Reasons you SHOULDN’T pick Matt as a coach:

1) you prefer coaches more focussed on their instagram profiles & selling books than the results they generate (Matt has ~35yrs tri experience, 20 as a professional coach, and personally has over 25 AG IM victories), 2) you want to ‘hack’ your way to succes and prefer not to do the hard work (Matt is all about long term consistent gain), 3) you prefer a coach who gives you a cuddle rather than the cold honest truth you need to hear (Matt might care more for you than you care for you), 4) you prefer a coach who will take you in and take your money and not care about how you represent him and his reputation (Matt is very selective in who he works with and only works with those who are committed to getting the most from themselves), 5) you prefer a brainless 16 week program and a bunch of PDFs over deep insight into technique, mindset, gear, and race day execution (Matt has hours of videos accompanying his programs and is regularly adding to his library).

Actually, you know what, just don’t choose Matt. I’ll keep the secret sauce to myself!

Three years in and I don’t regret it for one second. Like any serious pursuit or passion, what you put in is what you get out. If you’ll put in what Matt asks of you - consistency, communication, and desire - you will get out more than you expect. Knowledgr, mental toughness, inspiration and performance results all are yours for the taking. It’s not easy, but there’s not a coach out there that will truly care as much as Matt does about you. Dream big!
