I paid for 20 years of hospital cover with NIB. In July 2019 they reduced my hospital coverage (to junk) without me asking and without me realising, and now they wont cover me for my neck surgery. The policy change was buried in the fine print of their updated user agreement.

Read the fine print, and watch these parasites like a hawk, because they will do you over if you let them.

In 2018 the optometrist incorrectly filled out my script which caused further damage to my eyes. Furthermore, I was assured my direct debit would be put on hold when I moved overseas. Nope, payments came out and there was absolutely no support when I tried to rectify the situation.

I have been held qantas travel insurance for the past 10 years and never had such a bad experience as I have. We have booked an overseas trip over 8 months ago and Covid-19 was not known of then, called to ask about cancellation and was told that my policy is useless and does not cover covid-19 or any government regulations imposed on people. I have spent $600 on a worthless policy. Very bad service and no empathy. Will never insure with NIB again and very disappointed qantas has teamed up with them

I would never recommend anyone purchase a policy from NIB. Qantas actively promotes a worthless policy. We purchased our annual policy 23/10/19 through Qantas, after waiting for over 3 hours to speak to the Qantas Service Center to seek a refund (under the “rules” we would need to use the credit 12 months after we purchased the fare, this does not fit in with our plans the event we were going to has been postponed until April/May 2021 well after the expiry date) I was advised we would be charged a cancellation fee and to contact our insurer. There is nothing in the policy that excludes a pandemic so I was feeling confident we could make a claim. NIB have this wonderful “get out” clause they will not cover “any loss caused by any Government intervention, prohibition” their service consultant could not care less and was very unsympathetic. If I stayed with my usual insurer CGU I would have been covered - lesson learnt. I will never recommend this policy to anyone. Qantas needs to revisit their relationship with this insurer.

NIB Boss wants to scrap Medicare only because he wants more people to join NIB. I say scrap all Greedy Private Health Insurers and make Medicare cover everything. Goodbye NIB.

My daughter had to make a hospital claim and NIB, 1st said that she had a pre exisiting condition of Asthma. As I got all the paper work back to them, they changed the pre exisiting condition to a chest infection. Didn’t cover her hospital stay. Expensive, not helpful or understanding. I will be changing health funds & not recommending NIB to anyone.
For anyone looking at getting private health cover NIB is NOT the one to pick. Also reading a few other reviews I can see I made the wrong choice.

I've just cancelled my hospital cover with NIB, after 4 years of watching my premiums go up-up-up by ~30% in total the last straw came when they quibbled over a spurious rule they had when I bought some contact lenses online - any excuse not out pay out!

An extra claim will leave me $40 out of pocket but the same for a hospital claim will leave you $1000 out of pocket.

Do not swallow the line this industry makes about ever increasing costs meaning premiums must go up, look an NIBs own share holders report, 20% increase in profits last year alone, and up every year before. while i've been a member up from $80 to $188 million. dividends are definitely coming before customer service.

Recently my wife spent two nights in hospital having being admitted on an emergency basis. Excess of $750 we well understand but just over $1000 of out of pocket expenses for a 2 night stay.
We have top hospital cover but it apparently doesn't cover:
1. The Surgeon doing a follow-up with his patient after the operation. This is truly bizarre. Does NIB truly believe that the Surgeon shouldn't follow-up?
2. X-Rays and scans ordered by the Emergency Department Doctor and the Surgeon. How is a Doctor to diagnose if NIB apparently believe scans and X-Rays are not necessary?

I have been with nib for 6years because i get A cooperate discount thinking I was getting the best offer, I was paying around $550 maybe more and that was for the top hospital cover and all extras,I stuck with them thinking I was getting the best cover. When I found out what other people were paying for health care , I found out they were getting not just the same but better offers I called them up to let them know, so they offered me top hospital cover and general and major dental optical and physio I also had to add postnatal to my cover and had the waiting period of 12months and I was paying around 450 and about 6months later got a email saying my premium was going up to around $500. So I rang around and found a better heath care that covered top hospital and COVERED postnatal i got all extras added, general dental and preventive dental I don’t have a annual limit, and I only paying about $350 $352.

I lodged a claim against a QBE policy , now owned by NIB, and after due process my claim was approved on March 24. I was told that the amount would be paid immediately into my bank account. I am yet to receive the money 1 month later. They do not respond to emails and phoning is impossible. I am now wondering whether they actually have the capacity to pay due to the number of claims they must now be processing and will I ever get it.

I had been with NIB since 2012 and paid more than $18k up until March this year when I needed surgery running in the $5k mark but they wouldn't pay. Their black and white hard copy policy clearly states that...Hospital treatment, including accomodation as a private patient in a private or public hospital & doctor's bill in hospital....will be covered. But they turned around and said I had to have medicare! Where was that written next to the policy! Meanwhile they don't care, business as usual and just keep taking your money on a monthly basis until you get sick or need surgery but too late!

We have been insured continuously with Qantas Travel Insurance, (NIB Underwriters) for 4 years. We have never used our insurance until the other day regarding Covid 19, this is how the NIB representative stated our position and where we stand.
Our trip was booked over a year ago and Covid 19 did not even exist.
Question: If we were to cancel our trip where do we stand?
Answer: Covid 19 isn't a recognised event so you are not covered.
Question: So if we go on our trip and we get sick what happens?
Answer: If you choose to go on your trip and get sick with Covid 19 you are not covered.
Question: If a Global Pandemic is declared where do we stand?
Answer: You chose to go into a declared pandemic area, so, you are not covered.
Question: So if we cancel our trip we are not covered, so NIB is forcing us to go on our trip because the Covid 19 is not a recognised event and if we go on our trip and get sick with Covid 19, NIB now recognise Covid 19 exists and because we chose to go on our trip we are not covered.
Value for money - couldn't select zero.
After four years of using this company, we can honestly say we will be insuring elsewhere.
Reference the NIB sending a private message, it is just smoke and mirrors in a poor attempt to appear they are doing something, all they asked was "what's your policy number and that was the end of it - just silence.

I have been with them 4 years. Never had to claim anything. I've tried for the first time last year and it was ridiculous. The claims keep disappearing from their portal. I'm so annoyed. DO NOT ENGAGE with them

NIB are the worst, ten years of membership payments and then when I need a sinus surgery operation they will not to pay for the theatre costs, anesthetist - just a few select surgery items and that's with medicare's contribution - what is the point of years of payments for cover, paying the excess and then when you're told the day before surgery by the hospital your insurance will pick and choose only a few items and you're going to have to stump up $13k before surgery and you'll be left out of pocket well over $10k? Instead it's been months of pain and now lost employment, constant flu like symptoms (not such a great look in 2020!) while I ride it out with another insurer and beg for treatment by the now backlogged public system due to the virus. NIB - thanks for nothing, I won't be recommending you ever. Check your policy for "restricted services" if you're with them, or considering joining them - because they might not be there for you when you need them.

My doctor recently advised me to have a procedure carried out.
As this was a day procedure I was disappointed to find I have to pay a $500 excess.
As this was unexpected I had no time to save the $500.
Therefore I find myself on the public waiting list and feeling it pointless having private health insurance.
I emailed nib to air my problem but received no reply. That adds to the disappointment.

I booked insurance last September for International Travel on May 19, 2020.
I have made numerous phone calls and sent several emails asking for a refund or credit for a policy that could not be used because of Government issued bans on international travel as a result of the Corona Virus Pandemic. As a Silver for Life Qantas Frequent Flyer and the fact that I booked the Insurance through Qantas I would have expected that Qantas would provide a satisfactory follow up, but they only refer you back to NIB. I will not be making a claim on the policy.
Looking at the frustration of the other reviewers on this forum I see that just about all of the reviewers have left the lowest possible rating that this company could achieve.
I will lodge a complaint with the Australian Financial Complaints Authority if my latest email to [email protected] is not replied to or I shall contact [name removed] to see what she thinks of the situation.

Earlier this year I set up a NIB policy to cover myself and my 2 daughters. 3 payments came out because someone there had fraudulently created 2 additional policies in my 3 year old and my 6 year olds name, using my credit card details.
It took 10+ phone calls and many transfers of clowns there passing the buck. Until eventually, I just called cancellations and "Posed as" as 3 policy holders in 3 different conversations and had all 3 policies cancelled.
See how ridiculous that sounds?
NOW - Since then, I receive No less than 3 phones calls per week from NIB asking me to come back - find more suitable policies, other crap like that. To each, being that it is NOT the offending fraudster I initially dealt with, I politely decline and insist that no one from NIB ever call me again.
We are now about 3 months after that initial problem, 3 calls a week, 3 seperate assurances per week that my details will be removed from NIB's call system and here we are… with me, receiving my SECOND phone call this week from the same call centre here in Brisbane. A lady yesterday via online NIB Chat - Gave me her word in writing that my details would be removed and offered a Manager to confirm by email to me. Not yet happened management!

Booked a holiday through Luxury Escapes to Singapore for mid July. Travel Insurance taken care of through their preferred insurer NIB underwritten by QBE. Three days after booking I was diagnosed with possible kidney cancer. Mid October and I still cannot get a response to what I would have thought was a straight forward claim.
Have requested a face to face meeting with a company representative in Melbourne only to be informed that such an office does not exist. My communication has been via a call centre in the Philippines who informed me on Friday (Melbourne time) that I would receive a call by end of business Monday informing me of the outcome. The only call made was my call to them.
The lack of service is a disgrace. Missed our trip to Singapore, lost a kidney and lost respect for NIB.

I have have only been with NIB this time for three months but have been with them previously for 2 years. I just got notified that i needed an urgent operation (not pre-existing). . They were NOT compassionate about my circumstances and just kept repeating that I had not the proper health care to cover this operation! The Policy I had obviously was a waste of money! I rate this health fund as Terrible.
