The program teaches all technical and soft skills needed to junior data analyst:
- Python programming language with libraries like Pandas, Matplotlib, Seaborn, Plotly, etc.
- Jupiter Notebook
- SQL queries and data processing
- Data preprocessing with Python
- Exploratory and statistical data analysis
- Business analytics and A/B test
- Data visualization (graphs and dashboards) with Python libraries and Tableau
- Automation and machine learning basics
As a student, I feel constant support from the Practicum team: community managers, mentor, technical support and from fellow students. You can ask any question in the chat and get needed help pretty fast. Sometimes there could be some time lag because the team can be located in the other part of the world but technical support helps really fast anyway.
I also need to mention the career support program where student can get various help with resume writing, portfolio preparation, attend webinars with technical recruiters and career couches and much more.
To make the program even more appealing, I would make some suggests:
* I would add kind of "tutor-on-duty" to answer the questions of the students from the different time zones. Sometimes, I got stuck in some tasks and could not move forward. I had to wait the help from my tutor till the next day because of the time difference. It could be pretty annoying for people with the packed schedules.
* It would be very useful to have both way communication with the reviewer.
* Also, after completion of the projects, it would be very interesting to see other students' projects or best projects from the previous cohorts.
Thank you Yandex Practicum Team for the great program, for the opportunity to be part of the great community, and opportunity to grow as a professional.
The course breaks down a simple project into digestible chunks in an online learning environment that allows for immediate feedback an expansive look into each topic. Upon completing the course, I'm in no way an expert in HTML or CSS (that's what the full course... and the many years after are for) but I do have a solid grasp on the fundamentals. While many tutorials I've completed seem to focus on the theoretical rather than the practical, Practicum actually had me doing stuff. In the process doing stuff, I began to understand the broader concepts themselves. I created the design for website, I understand why it looks the way it looks, and I had fun along the way.
I'd recommend the introductory course for anyone looking to get into web development, and if the full course is anything like the introductory course, I'm sure it will teach you a ton.
You will have a lot of opportunities to apply just learned skills to real-world data. I'm at about half of my journey but I already fill quite confident when I need to manipulate data and prepare it for further analysis. Now I easily switch between Stata (my primary tool) and Python.
There are some issues with the exerciser though. Quite often it is too sensitive to minor mistakes like additional white space or the order of variables included. It might take ages to find what is going wrong and sometimes call for technical support which also takes a lot of time and interrupts the learning process.
* The team makes it feel like home, always trying to assist with various issues and helping you to get through your track.
* You can start practicing immediately in the course platform, and work on your projects - the installation of the workspace on your PC is not a barrier! you can deal with it later.
* The course takes you step-by-step with small amounts of theory and small tasks - a great thing if you deal with concentration difficulties!
* There's practicing from the very begining, you code nice stuff before you notice.
* All the topics you need for your projects are covered in the course texts, no need to drown in a sea of information - you'll know what to search for.
* Very organized forum for questions about tasks which makes it easy to find what you need quickly.
* All the necessary material is textual, the videos are usually just a bonus - a great advantage if you are the type of person that loves texts and despises videos like me :)
Besides that, I think you'll need to develop a good coding style on your own, and search for efficient and aesthetic ways to implement your code. I came to this course with some experience in Python coding and with a BSc in electrical engineering, but I don't think that's necessary for studying.
I work for a tech company and was a little bit familiar with SQL and Data/Business analytics before starting this course, so initially, I thought the course would be too easy or boring for me. I was proven wrong!
You will be studying/working in sprints, and be given just enough time to go through theory first and then apply your skills to hand-on projects. I think this is very clever, and actually makes you think and process information, rather than just learn based on given scenarios (I tried Python courses from other schools, and notices that as soon as I finish one section of a program - I would have forgotten it).
Also, the way you receive feedback about your projects (can be just about code you wrote, or format/conclusion you made) is very similar to the feedback you would have received at your job.
Overall, the main benefit and purpose of this program is to equip you with basic standard commands and, what is more important, to teach you to think like an analyst.
Probably, my main advance to anyone who wants to start this or any similar program would be: don't expect to know a solution for every single problem by the end of this program. But learn to understand a problem first, and then find solutions to it. That will set yourself up for success.
Thank you Yandex Practicum Team for the great and constantly improving program!
I took Data Analytics course (I was a rookie in this field). From the very beginning I've learned basics of python, python for data analysis, sql, tools for data visualization and analysis... So many new things! And this things are really good structured within the course. Exercises, built on practice and real-based cases, very interesting projects in the end of each module... I definitely feel confident and currently applying for a job in this field.
Thank you Yandex, and Yandex Team for helping me along this way!
You have professionals helping, and have the opportunity to network with many other students who are at various stages of trying it out or refining their skills. You get valuable feedback on what code you submit for projects so you can improve them and get better.
They also have career services to help you land jobs once you've finished the program.
The good:
• The introductory course was a good way to discover that their teaching style is a good fit for me.
• I have learned a LOT in a short time. The large projects and strict deadlines keep me learning at a much faster pace than I ever would studying on my own.
• Having the main tutor, community manager, student tutors, and fellow classmates available. They're there if I have questions, need help, need to vent, etc.
• It is an incredible value. It's almost a year's worth of coding education for only $1000. Even when things aren't perfect, I can't really complain since I've saved so much money by going here instead of other (pricier) boot camps. And I feel like I'm receiving a very quality education for that price.
Could be better:
• Maybe it's because I'm older and not as quick as I used to be. But I spend a LOT more time on this course than I expected to. It's been the equivalent of a full-time job for me. They say 10 hours a week minimum. But I don't know how realistic that is depending on your experience level starting out.
• Sometimes there is a language barrier. The way things are worded on the learning platform can be difficult to understand. We also have live coding events and it can be difficult for me to understand what the programmer is saying.
• The learning platform can be frustrating. If you don't answer the question the exact way to the computer is expecting you to, then you can't continue. And if nobody is around on the slack channel to help you, then you can be stuck there for a long time. Which is not only a time waste, but also prevents you from being able to access your project and start working on it.
• This isn't really a negative thing. But they have a lot of faith in us lol. The projects we do every two weeks are not simple. It's not rare to feel unprepared and overwhelmed every time we see the instructions. It usually feels impossible at first. And the code reviewers are very strict about what they'll accept. Yet somehow, I keep managing to stick with it and complete everything.
Hope this is helpful to someone out there.
