Download.com Reviews & Complaints (11)

DOWNLOAD.COM - my personal view. WARNING - DON'T ever use this website - STAY AWAY! It's full of malware and crap, which is installed in 7 easy steps (as of April 2014). Unfortunately I accepted the 1. step. Even though I still had 6 steps to go, this single acceptance was enough for the malware/crap to enter my PC. Luckyly my Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 detected the malware/crap and stopped it. But I had to restart my PC and it took a long time as a awful lot of settings needed to be reset. I'm currently scanning my Pc to see if everything is in order. HC

Download.com used to be a reliable and good web site where you could find tons of good shareware and freeware. I am surprised to find that it has become a site that has completely compromised its integrity for the almighty dollar. I mean sure make some money with ads but how many people are savvy enough to click all the correct Decline/don't make suchandsuch web site my new homepage? We have enough malware without this web site making all its offerings into essentially malware.

If you love software treasure-hunting, Download.com is the site for you! This massive and well-rounded collection of shareware (try-before-you-buy) and freeware (totally free software) is fully searchable and sortable. And there's no wait for a package in the mail: download it NOW, install it, and take it for a test drive!

I have visited this site a couple of times to search for software that fits what I need to do and I like it. It is a cool site but the not the best out there. When you go to this site to search for software make sure if you don't recognized the company to do a company review or search for review for that software on google. I have downloaded many things from this site and I'll say 80% of the downloads are uninstalled very shortly after installation. Its not that the website itself is bad it is that it allows for some of the most unusable and spam filled software out there to be uploaded for people to download. I will say this not all the software is bad there are things they have on there that are useful like editor reviews and user reviews for the software read those if they have them to find out if there is any problems with the software. The previous poster post that they are verified spyware and virus free which they are but it comes down to "do you want to install multiple different toolbars into your browser or do you want to install this piece of software to?" I know thats how most of the free software creators get their money but you should advertise that in your description of the software stating "this software also contains the messyouup toolbar do you want to download it?" I remember one install that took my about 1 hour because every next button was either an advertisement for another piece of software or another toolbar I finally got tired of it and will now only download from the creator's website.

If you are looking for a new video conversion software, dvd burning, or pretty much anything you should check here first to see what they have for download. Most are just trial versions but at least you can see whether it works for you or not.

I've watched this site since the turn of the century. In the last ten years this site became a mecca for destroying your PC. In the list of their top 10 downloads half is almost always destructive to your PC. They are loaded with bundled junkware, PUP's, and malware. The positive reviews look like the spam reviews that are being placed by paid companies to hide the bad reviews. Don't believe it? Look up howtogeek.com's article on downloading the top 10 from download.com. It will literally show you exactly the subversive garbage that is out there and how these companies become breeding grounds for browser hijackers, and potential hacker playgrounds.

Flat out, the BEST site for any sort of download. All programs/software have been tested to be spyware/virus free so you can be assured you are safe when downloading anything. Also, pay attention to the reviews for the program you are about to download. Watch out though, as quite a few programs are trials only, so be sure to not waste you time, look for the free ones! If you need protection for your computer, this is the place to go! If you find my review helpful, please send me a Thank You and rate it!

Every time they change the UI, it depreciates. When you ask for NEW ONLY you also get FREE TO TRY. Recently (June 2017) it has become inundated with Windows 10 Apps, most (if not all) of which redirect to MS Store, and, most of which are useless one-function items or games. You used to be able to get up to 30 items per screen; now 10. On following up on any particular item, you get the same video being played about the nature of "FREE" apps with no way of shutting it off. Oh, for more ways of limiting the search to things of interest!

Terrible!, stay away from cnet / download.com they now include malware on every download, and it fills your browsers with pop-ups, advertising, new homepages, extentions, etc... over 15 ad programs that are impossible to remove. I had to reset my mac to original settings and add again all usual software one by one... I cant believe they are doing this, but its well documented and there are lawsuits ongoing for this terrible practice...

I used to recommend this site to anybody as a slick low key interface to simply download and that's it. Over the years, it's become anything but. I especially dislike the following, on *ANY* website: 1. Unsolicited videos about things that I don't care about, that run before I can even see where they are on the screen, so it takes me a few seconds to find and stop them. 2. Ads that pop up in the middle of the screen, obscuring the text that I had just navigated to. People around me can overhear the videos, and it's disruptive and unprofessional. I also don't understand the following: 3. The plethora of utility programs these days that want to free up unnecessarily used space on my drive and delete my cookies and browsing history (when I have 160 GB free all the time), having me believe that my computer will slow to a crawl if I don't. 4. Aftermarket registry cleaners, (there's some bloat in it, but it's just a database). CCleaner is the only one I know of that lets me pick which keys to delete and explains what things are. 5. Bloated all in one security solutions that play on people's fears during the cyber security craze. I don't visit malicious sites, and never get viruses or ransom ware. I don't need a new "secure browser" or several virus scan/ firewall programs running at once when I can't disable what I don't want. They chew up memory and the extra services slow down my booting. Are these things why you can't use Windows with 4 gigs of memory anymore?. 6. Driver sleuth programs that can handle updates so much better than Windows or Lenovo can. Now, there were some helpful paragraphs and links where I was able to learn about new software. But what offended me the most, were the silly "You might also like" ads, like, "Bought a house before 'x' date? The state will pay off my mortgage for me!" or, "Stop eating this food right now or I'm going to get cancer!", or, "Got diabetes? Start eating eggs and the condition will cure itself!", (here I was thinking seeing a doctor and getting blood tests was the way to go), or, "This food is why you can't lose weight!" (and here I was blaming sugar), or, "Eat this and you'll drop twenty pounds!", (here I was counting calories). Overall, I see little reason to use this site anymore over the parent company's, to download anything.
