My husband I have had a Citibank card for over 2 years now and we use the card constantly over seas, we travel to many countries and have never had a problem. I lost my card in Thailand and they were able to cancel just my card and leave my husbands card still active on our joint account, which was fantastic. My card was skimmed after I used it in an AtM in Vietnam and Citibank refunded the money to my account with out any issues.

Lodged the online application of Citibank Plus transaction account 10 days ago. Never received a response. Called Citibank today, they told me need to go to post office to do verification. I asked why no one contact me or email me... No explanation, No apology, Nothing.
Also inquired about foreign currency account 10 days ago and was told someone will contact me in 2-3 days. After 10 days, same thing, NO CONTACT.

I do need to "RETHINK" if still BANKING with Citibank or not.

apply for a balance transfer credit card, no progress in three weeks. Every week, different staff called me and asked the same questions; the next phone call is about the confusion from previous phone call; didn't know "job title" or "occupation" in English when trying to ask me what is my job. After i made complaints to team manager, my application is declined one hour later, despite my income is in top 3-5% of tax payers and moderate commitment. Ask them the reason, saying couldn't provide enough pay slips to supporting my income, despite they never ask me to provide additional documents in multiple phone calls, despite i have uploaded two years PAYG summary.

Not worth the trouble even considering the 150k Qantas points. Avoid this bank at all cost!

Been with Citi 7+ years regrettably got a Citi credit card. All Australian banks have offered relief with reduced rates, pause interest, lower repayments most without prompting. Citi's lame apply for 3 months deferral is a joke. Wish I had gone with a true Australian bank.

My husband and I have tried to open a large term deposit with Citibank Australia. The process of this was ridiculous to state the least! The process went on for over 2 weeks and the account was still not opened. The amount of information we had to provide was over the top. They sent us a 37 page application form which we had to print out ALL and sign only 5 pages but they wanted all 37 pages. Staff rude and clueless about processes. After all of this and reading these horrible reviews and providing all information that we could possibly provide they were still not happy so we have discontinued the process. We became afraid that we would never see the money back again.

I chose to get a Citibank account before I travelled to Japan because it miraculously had no ATM withdrawal fees and no international transaction fees. I was quite wary because it sounded too good to be true and there are so many negative reviews online.
I was pleasantly surprised by the effortless cash withdrawal and card payment in Japan. I withdrew from 711 ATMs and was charged no fee. On top of that, the exchange rates were miles better than the foreign exchange shops. I got 83 yen for 1 aud...amazing! It was easy to know the day's exchange rate using the app.
I did notify the bank via my online account before going overseas. And the only drawback is it took me 2 to 3 days to transfer money from my Commonwealth bank account to Citibank. All in All, I highly recommend if you're going overseas!

I knew how bad Citibank is from the reviews and unethical reputation so this is my fault that I still made an account but they are actually the worst bank I have ever had an account with. I needed an account with an international bank for my long term travel overseas so just for that use I made one with Citi Australia. First of all there is not real benefit to have an account with them for this use. They advertise that ATM fee is free with all the Citi bank ATM all around the world but the reality is that Citi bank has been selling their banking service for individual customers to local banks so even an ATM says Citi bank its often owned by another bank which charges you as normal. In Latin America you barely see Citibank ATM. I spent a lot of money for the fee. Use ING bank for travel. They cover ATM fee. Another start is that I got my card stolen and requested them to reissue a new card and send it to the hostel that I was staying. They accepted the change and I double-checked with them that they updated the information correctly because a friend told me that they sent a new card to his old address and he had to stay and wait extra two weeks. My new card didn’t arrive after over two weeks. I emailed them but not response as always. I got a help to make an international call to talk to Citi and they said they did send a card to my old address. It was already frustrating how disorganised they can be but when I asked to cancel the card and send another one to the hostel they told me to write a letter to change the address and send it to them for the security reason. I told that they received my request of changing the address over the phone last time but she told me they never do that... What?????

This is my story and I strongly recommend another bank. There are not many good banks but there are so many better banks than Citibank.

Why does it take so long to transfer money to my Citibank account from PayPal when other banks appear to be able to do with by the next day? I went to sleep with the Paypal withdrawal to Citibank completed and the withdrawal to my other bank pending, but woke up to find that only the other bank was credited!

I also don't want to be forced to use a secure key or OTP. I would prefer an option where I can answer a serious of questions to prove that I am who I am instead. I think Citibank presumes that travelers keep to one SIM which is not a choice built on wisdom.

Finally, beware the horror story of getting emergency cash from Citibank while overseas - literally no option for Western Union or MoneyGram (even through the service provided by MasterCard for free because Citibank does not allow it!) and getting money at a branch will take around five hours!!!

I opened a Citibank savings account last year, with the intention of reorganising some of the financial services that I use. The savings account was fine, apart from a rather neurotic website (which appears to have been designed by two different teams, who didn't talk to each other). So I applied for a credit card, and that's when the fun started. My application seems to have been handled by Citibank's Practical Jokes Department -that's the impression I have of their appalling call centre. After 5 weeks of enduring the bumbling incompetence of every Citibank representative I spoke to, with misplaced paperwork, repetitive requests for information that had already been provided, and stupidly ineffective "security procedures" I have withdrawn my request. And this morning I closed my savings account: the mere idea of having to deal with the Citibank call centre if I actually had a problem that needed rapid resolution filled me with dread. It will be a cold day in hell before I have anything further to do with any part of Citibank. There are plenty of other financial institutions vying for my business - I'm the customer that banks really want: a well paid professional with plenty of disposable income. I'm not going to tolerate the sort of nonsense that Citibank have subjected me to in the last month, and I advise anyone considering opening an account of any sort with this grossly dysfunctional bank to take their money elsewhere.

Incompetent staff, bad procedures, complete failure to deliver anything useful

Applied for a credit card (Signature) and they kept me waiting for 10 days. When I contacted, they asked some more documents. Provided all, including tax return statements in additional to recent payslips.
Each time I contacted, I waited 25-30 minutes on phone, and they have no Australia-based customer service, everything is handled from Philippines. Very poor English, hard to get any question answered.
My income greatly exceed their requirement, I have excellent credit record, no loan, no debt, no liabilities.
Anyway, finally they told me your application unsuccessful - and I asked why, can you show me a single reason why?
He says "not sure, maybe the officer was busy, and too many applications, so she declined."
Have never seen such an incompetent financial institution.

I've been with citibank for 7 years, but my account has been inactive for many, with me just logging on to check my funds were there occasionally having moved back to the UK. When I returned to Australia this meant I had a lot to sort out, and the online chat service were fantastic. And when there was something they couldn't fix online, they called me! Super helpful. Noticeably better than most customer service.

My partner got phone calls telling him that they have a new plan for him, it was the "best deal" and the repayments would be only $360 a month what these thieving animals fail to mention is that this is on top of already existing plans present on the card, we currently now have FOUR different payment plans each with interest rates ranging from 7% to 17%!!! We asked them to roll it over to one plan but have declined. We asked to speak to a manager they wont put us through, customer service calls but no manager. They ignore your requests and even hang up on you. If I wasn't civilised I would be using colourful language to describe them.

Citibank sneakily charged a credit card annual fee a month before it was due, so I was not given the opportunity to close my card in time to avoid the fee. They basically made me pay a year's membership for a year that I'm not using. Then they closed my online accounts so I am unable to get copies of the statements to demonstrate what they have done. Avoid at all costs. Try American Express - they do customer service a hell of a lot better and can handle requests via online chats, transcripts which you can keep copies of as PROOF.

I had applied for a credit card balance transfer about a year ago and as all balance it was mainly to close my existing loan accounts and reduce interest as it was a zero interest card. It got refuse for no obvious reason. So the logical reasoning here is if your existing loans monthly repayments is higher than the card you are applying for then obviously it will be easier for you to repay this card easily once you have closed your existing loan with the transfer. My salary was higher than their min requirement but still did not go through even with a good credit score. with all the negative reviews, i wonder how this bank is not under investigation.

I recently applied for a Citibank Credit Card, very low amount. I was declined, no good reason. I was shocked. I am retired, own my own house, have no debts and have a steady income. I was told Citibank was a good credit card to travel overseas with, otherwise I wouldnt have bothered applying. After being declined, I wrote back and got no reply. I'm furious that now my excellent credit rating will probably be tarnished. I'm very worried they have a huge amount of my detailed history & information and will probably sell it off to others. Before being declined, an Indian fellow rang me to query things that he couldn't understand in my application. He was VERY difficult to understand and seemed to get frustrated with me as I explained things. After all this happened, I THEN read all the terrible reviews. I sure wish I had read them before I ventured down this path. Dont do it!!!

I've applied for the Citibank credit card which offered 150,000 Qantas Points. The website shut down half way through without letting me upload supporting documents, but I have still received 'You've submitted your application' email. Few days later I called them and discovered that they declined application due to 'no reason'. After multiple chats with the offshore call centre I discovered that the rejection was because no docs were submitted. I uploaded those docs manually via the 'manual' link they provided, but they asked me to send them a letter (!) with the request to reconsider the application, because they were not able (!) to reactivate the existing application in the system. They did not want to admit that it was their technical issue on their website, even though I had a screenshot provided. In the end they still declined my application.
Went to Westpac online applied for black card got approved with 15k limit instantly , card arrived in the mail within 7 days. so to me citi bank dont really care about customers service and by this meant they should be called crappybank.
Completely unprofessional and feel like being cheated by them. This is also the problem with banks In general where outsources their call centre jobs to Philippines or India , utterly and completely useless.
STAY AWAY from crappy bank if your want their craps.
Just read the whole 41 reviews about crappy bank looks like everyone has the same bad bad experience with them.

I signed up for this card to take overseas, have not yet left for my trip but have already had to call Citibank 5 times and speak to a customer service officer - none so far have been helpful and all contradict what the previous one has said. They will lock you out of your account and will not notify you of it forcing you to call and wait to be put through to an incompetent customer service advisor

We've been with Citibank for some years now and mostly use it for international travel. A family member lost his bank cards while abroad and had to get in contact with Citibank. The customer service was excellent compared to the other bank and easy. The replacement will take up to 10 days. They have called the hotel ahead of time and arranged for the replacement card to be sent to that location. Yes, 10 days is lengthy compared to some other banks in an emergency situation but the other bank completely screwed up on their end and the customer service/communication was appalling. We will continue to bank with Citibank while overseas and we recommend cb to our family and friends when travelling o/s
