I wanted to improve my road craft and get more from the car without doing the full test track course, The course starts by you explaining what you want with the instructor, then the morning session was assessment and improvements, afternoon was practice and beginning to explore vehicle dynamics. Steve was very knowledgeable, explained things clearly, and I would thoroughly recommend the course
I wanted to learn some of the more advanced track driving techniques, such as race braking, trail braking, left foot braking, etc. to improve my speed and car control. CAT took an holistic approach to my objectives, applying a combination of repeatable process, discussion of the theory and engineering principles that underpin the techniques, and repetition of exercises to get comfortable with the practical application.
I left the day feeling very well informed on these techniques, and crucially that I had a solid foundation in these new techniques that I could apply in future.
Paul and the team are very approachable, consultative and extremely knowledgeable. They are also refreshingly humble about their immense talents!
Whilst there is not an inconsiderable outlay for the day, I feel I have gained far more value in terms of confidence and control than I would have by investing in yet more go-faster bits!
What I didn't expect (and greatly enjoyed) was that Paul provided digested engineering background for what is happenning with the tyres, suspension and the rest of the car (I've learned what 'unsprung' means :) ) before each of the exercises so I could start connecting what I 'felt' the car do to what's physically happenning. I don't think I would have ever picked up many of these things just by reading / watching what's in the popular media, regardless of how good some of it is.
I feel this gives me excellent foundation to start learning to handle the car on the track and have much more fun. That is, if I figure out a way around my motion sickness problem :)
The site is epic and really has to be experienced to be believed.
Paul was simply fantastic in his approach to teaching. Very calm, patient and extremely knowledgeable; being able to put a mechanical/physics based explanation to everything that I experienced, or what the car was doing in all situations.
Paul took me around the handling track on arrival and scared me at the pace he got the car around the track. I was adamant i wouldn't be able to do that. Well, by the end of the day I was and across 3 laps my splits were within 0.6 seconds! I will most certainly be returning for more training. CAT have spurred on a real love for performance driving and I look forward to bolstering my skill set before going on some track days and who knows, maybe take the steps into getting a race Licence.
All round 5*, id give it 10* if I could. Highly recommend. Hats off CAT!! Wills.
Braking techniques on the mile straight at 100mph started the day. This is something I never thought I would have to do, but with Colin the voice of calm next to you, it all passes without a hitch. Now my understanding of ABS and braking at speed sets me up to be so much more confident on daily driving..
Taking the car on to the 2 mile oval bowl and driving in in lane 5 at 120mph, again with Colin keeping everything simple, allows you to understand the art of driving whilst looking ahead..
We then have a lesson on oversteer and understeer... fun fun fun. This was my Top Gear moment..again not something you would do normally, but seeing how the car reacts with ABS on, then off, let’s you understand your car so much more..
Moving on to the Handling circuit to learn Cornering techniques gives you your Lewis Hamilton moment. Colin makes you put the days training in to practice to get the car around the track most efficiently.. late braking, controlled acceleration, looking ahead..
Like I said at the start.. “You think you can drive a car” think again..
This day with Colin is something that should be compulsory with new drivers to give an understanding of safe driving techniques..
If you have a performance car, do yourself a favour.. have a day at CAT Driver Training to understand the limits of your car in a safe environment with a fantastic instructor ..
The CAT team were excellent and looked after us really well.
I have left feeling a lot more confident in my ability to deal with challenging situations and appreciate my cars ability to deal with them.
The day was highly organised, skilfully put together and was also great fun.
Can’t recommend the Cat team highly enough - a real professional team with a light touch.
Will definitely be going back for more!!
A great environment to be in as one minute a £200k Aston or a 180mph Roller SUV were coming past me and the next we were behind a dustbin lorry or a Biogas fuelled double decker.
Got home and had to have a sleep on the sofa.
Excellent trip.
