Had a cracked screen so bad had to be replaced, went to local GIO office told i had to go through O'Brian glass, contacted them took a day they called me back to make a booking stating i would get $50 off if i paid over the phone now, wanted $675 total, asked for my location, Goulburn said they have no fitting station and would have to go to Fyshwick ACT and they would need it all day, told them it was inconvenient, whatvwould you do in Fyshwick all day with no car? told that is the only way. Again went back to GIO told them the situation again informed O'Brien Glass have to fit it, i then asked if the screen fitter just across the road could fit it, said no, i then informed them of restrictive trade practices, i obtained a quote from the local one which was $420, advised GIO they then informed me i would have to claim on line, did that after a dozen frustrating attempts, then the next day received another call from O'Brien Glass asking me to book in for fitting, told them the story, then went back to GIO told would have to make a general claim if O'Brian dont fit it, they then agreed i could have it fitted by another fitter and would have to be a general claim, had it fitted, then had to make a general claim whichnit would not accept, back to GIO o make claim refused telling me to try again on general claim then send them the claim number, did that then next day another call, from O'Brian Glass asking to book it in, told them to f off, getting sick of it now after 3 weeks, eventually they accepted the claim, still have not recieved the money, I saved them $250 for Gods sake, hopeless with claims.

I have been involved in a serious pile up involving 4 car and a truck, my car has been written off and I don't know which car hit me. I supplied the insurance company with the Police Report number, as the Police wouldn't give me any other details. Now the insurance is charging me $650.00 excess although the accident wasn't clearly my fault. Absolutely disgusting, I have been with them for years, but after this, I'll be looking elsewhere.

Not happy at all - ceiling collapsed due to weather etc. and all they did was find an excuse to reject the claim ....they said it was old age - not taken into account any winds etc. over the past 3 months bad weather ....1st claim I ever made in 35 years and a real bad taste as they have not looked after me at all - communication to me was non existent and now I have to fix the roof and pay the lot ...I had to arrange everything - they didn't care at all just excuses to reject claim and no customer care at all .
No more for me I will be stopping all my policies - 30 years of many policies each year and this is the service I get .....so now I have a bill over 5K and GIO don't give a damn ... thanks you so much .
So much for peace of mind ... get insurance on everything so can sleep at night , but when it comes to a problem happening they refuse ......thanks for all my sleepless nights !!!!!!
Stay away .

We are not fans of insurance generally, but we have just renewed our Home and Contents policy with GIO, because of two claim experiences in the past year.

The awning on the back of our house was damaged in a hail storm - and GIO handled the claim professionally and smoothly, despite some problems sourcing material from the original builder and designer of the awning, a local Spanline franchise.

Then, in mid-August, our much-loved dog suffered an accident in the back yard and badly injured his spine. Faced with substantial veterinary bills, we contacted GIO to check on the pet insurance in our Home and Contents policy.

It took only three calls and an email - and a payment was placed in our bank account within days. Admittedly, these were both smallish claims, but they were handled expertly and efficiently in a helpful, sympathetic and friendly manner. Based on this experience, we cannot speak more highly of GIO.

We have had our house and contents insured with GIO for about 25 years and have had several claims all have been resolved in a reasonable time frame and to our satisfaction with minimum fuss. Workmanship has been very good on most occasions. Policy price has certainly increased over the years but isn't excessive.

My car was written off due to a storm in November, I was paid out within 14 days of putting my claim in. They offered me a discount on my next insurance and kept me informed through the process. 3 cars were written by the same tree and mine was the first to be settled. I have insured through them again.

Put unleaded into diesel car by mistake, was an "accident", guess what, 2 weeks till they told me not covered,
same thing happened to me last year with Landcruiser, RACV paid for repairs no questions asked.
Do not use this insurance company, I should have read all the reviews before signing up for full comprehensive cover.

I was a not at fault driver injured in a recent car accident. I made a claim via the at fault driver's CTP insurance. My case manager at GIO CTP was lovely, she was understanding and did everything she could to assist me with treatment and revovery.

I would go for a 0 star rating. Been with them for 6 years. I had a portable cover which listed my old laptop. I bought a new one which I forgot to list. Lost it and they would not cover for it. So unfair (#@##@@)!!

I'm moving all my policies from them. No advantage of being a loyal customer.

This is only my second claim since owning/buying my home over 8 years ago. The first was for an air conditioner and the second being for a major loss, replacement of my home due to fire.
It has been over 7.5 months since I lost my home to fire, 4 days before Christmas.
Between GIO and LendLease (manager of reinstatement processes) I have been neglected, I am still at a standstill and minimal progress has been made.
I have received unreasonable and unfair responses with their preferred contractors for reinstatement. Their preferred builder is over $100k cheaper than other quotes that have been submitted, I know this because I personally obtained the other quotes at my own expense as GIO or LendLease would not disclose the figures with me.
I pay premiums on an amount and the quote for reinstatement is just shy of $200k LESS than the premiums I pay for. Their reason for "secondary quotes" were for comparison to ensure I am getting a 'fair and reasonable' outcome. The only thing fair and reasonable is the fact that its looks after GIO's pocket and it's their best interest they are looking after, not mine.
I have to make the first point of contact, otherwise I do not hear from anyone. I am not kept in the loop unless I ask.
My house has still not been demolished and the scope from their preferred builder is ridiculous. i.e quoting me $400 to cover a 3 seater corner spa I had in my bathroom.
I am disgusted that an insurance company as large as GIO provide such an inconsistent service to their customers.
I lost my home, everything I owned and on top of it all I am being continuously stuffed around by my insurance company. It is an absolute joke!
I am in the small percentage of people who are unfortunate enough to lose their home to fire and the service I have been provided is absolutely, undoubtingly appalling... I am immensely unsatisfied and at this point in time I DO NOT recommend GIO at all and I will probably, more likely than not, cancel my policy!!!

After 45 years of paying for insurance to GIO for 2 cars and 2 houses my parents finally made a claim for a retaining wall at their home of 35+ years . After a 3+ month wait their claim was refused. Their first claim in over 45 years and they got a big bad luck sorry your policy does not cover a retaining wall. My parents paid for top home + contents insurance for 45+ years and the first claim they make they are refused. Great cover !! GIO even had the hide to ask for the excess up front on the day the claim was made.. $1000 up front for nothing and still waiting for a refund. If home insurance does not cover retaining walls in a storm then what little do you cover... Not much from what I have seen. Would never recommend GIO or NRMA they once were good but now just look for a reason not to pay claims and only care about stock holders not policy holders. GIO you really let my parents down with garbage insurance that covers very little for a lot. Your phone operator was rude, very arrogant and totally useless!!
Will try seniors insurance!!... Good bye GIO after 45+ years.

Our insurance increased by 28% from last years to this years. After calling them they had no explanation and where happy for us to leave. From $1600 per year to $2000 per year. We made no claims. How do they justify that?

Having switched to GIO 2 years ago when they bought my house and contents insurance business, they have since managed to increase their premiums each year by 15 % and then eliminate the items I require (such as accidental coverage). GIO Have a bad name because they claim to change the policy details by way of letter beforehand, and it doesnt arrive (of course it wasn't sent we know that). I didn't make a claim in the 2 years and it seems they go after the numbers game. So fellow insurance buyers, read the fine print, because they are shifty insurers who change their policy without notifying you. If thats the case change companies. Naughty GIO!!

After many years as a multi policy holder with GIO for many years, I had the misfortune to make a claim for leaking pipe work in our main bathroom. The water leak had managed to show up in our daughters downstairs ensuite bathroom ceiling as a mouldy spot in two places at either end of the ceiling in December 2016. The spot was particularly damp, so investigation was evident, and that the leak was from the main bathroom.
Our intention was ar some stage to renovate the upstairs bathroom, this was brought forward. Mistake No. 1
In January 2017, we pulled up the floor and the wall in the main bathroom above the two spots and discovered leaking water pipes. One from the bath and one from shower, approx. 3m apart.
All good, it's covered under our GIO insurance. We contact GIO, they send out assessor, very prompt. Assessor says yes, pipe water leak covered, leaking shower tray is not. Leaking shower tray not responsible for downstairs leakage, assessor agrees its pipe work leakage. All good.
Assessor will send out their preferred building specialist to quote. Week or two later still no building specialist....rings to say can't get there, family crisis.
I inform assessor that I can not wait and need to progress repairs to flooring, floor joists, wall studs and frame plate to adjacent bedroom as damage is considerable and needs to be made liveable.
Mistake No. 2
Building Repair specialist finally arrives after a hard weekend of repairing water damaged flooring.
Apologises for not turning up the week earlier and askes me to supply him with photos of water damaged flooring etc. I do.
Assessor then askes that I supply a repair quotation from a boulder as well, we comply.
Difference between there building specialist and our builder is approx. $2000.00
Comparison of two quotes indicates that they have no allowance for the 6 hours working materials for stripping the bathroom to find the leak, plus only one leak, not two. Arguing that as we intended to renovate the bathroom, no allowance for finding the leak nor repairing the water damaged sub floor.
Oh, and as there was only one leak they would only cover 2m2 of damaged floor and wall. Forget the 3m damage to the other leak and adjacent bedroom damage.
Consequent emails and arguments to them may well have been written in Chinese, because they never bothered to read them.
Good news is that as a consumer I get to voice my rant and shift my insurance needs, automotive (6 family cars comprehensive and third party), home and contents and business insurance. All because they want to argue the toss and drag out paying $2000.00
Glad it happened over this small claim and not a major claim.
Would recommend GIO to my worst enemy.

I would rate them as 0 star if I could. These guys are real robbers! Do NOT ever buy insurance product from GIO!
My husband used them for business insurance several years ago and advised them NOT to renew his workers compensation insurance policy as he was a sole trader and didn't have any employee worked for him for quite a while back then. However, GIO reluctant to cancel his policy, still renewed his policy and chased him for payment by involving government people and debt collector. We had to explain to each of them to close the case.
We thought that was the end of the hassle. However, we only found out last year when we prepared to get another mortgage that GIO placed a credit default on my husband in 2015, without giving us any notification. They said we owe them $1400 for the workers compensation insurance payment!
It took us more than 6 months to get in reach with someone in charge of the case in GIO, who just told us that we had to pay $1700 to them for the default to be removed, because they provided insurance cover for 40 days before the cancellation was officially taken effect. We are current paying $2000ish a year for workers comp through another insurance company. So even if GIO covered us for 40 days due to the processing delay for cancellation, $1400 is a truly rip off (for 0 employee or 1 if it counts my husband himself) ! And they placed the incorrect default without notifying us in advance, and caused so much hassle and inconvenience to us. They have not even one word of apology, but request us to pay additional fee to get the default removed!
Honestly, the way and attitude they handle dispute and complaints are so disgusting and dishonoured. We are absolutely furious about the outcome, and will for sure seek for governmental and legal assistance to solve the matter fairly.

I inadvertently took out and paid for two online policies on the same property because my existing policy had crept up 200$. Each time i call GIO staff to make enquiries about the return of the money owed i am told that i have 3 policies on the same property and am given the complete run around when trying to rectify the situation and am provided with contradictory advise. Call centre staff repeat themselves, refuse to put me through to a supervisor and refuse to provide any further contact details. This is the most frustrating and incompetent company i have ever had dealings with. I keep getting transferred from person to person with no resolution even when the matter is referred to their outsourced dispute resolution organisation. I have been lied to, hung up on and today spent 1 1/2 hours on the phone being transferred back and forth with no one being able to take accountability. I have cancelled all policies and still can't be told when i will be refunded nearly 1000$ owing. GIO are unable to tell me if they have refunded the funds for one of the cancelled policies into an incorrect bank account. Run a mile. Don't deal with GIO under any circumstances unless you want to end up in the looney bin.
