Smksuperstore.com Reviews & Complaints (30)

Order for 1gb ram hasn't shipped in a week, contact/feedback service dosen't "work" with roadrunner email addresses (yet my confirmation email went through), weak business hours that make it virtually impossible to speak to a real human being... and a voicemail recording that is so poorly done that you can't hear a word of what the guy says. Nothing says "I care" like poor customer service, I suppose. The prices would be great, if I could actually get the product.

I ordered a Micro ATX computer case yesterday but noticed that my CPU fan won't fit in it. So I cancel the order this morning (within 24 hours of the order) by calling the customer service. No waiting, a lady just pick up the phone immediately and help to cancel my order. Got the full-refund within 30 munites. It's Great experience.

Formal Letter of Complaint to SMK (please READ)

To Whom It May Concern:

At the end of August last year I purchased a motherboard combo from your company. The product was delivered as expected in early September.

Within 24 hours I noticed an issue with the combo. It would randomly restart itself. Based on your recommendations, I spent additional money on a new power supply. The computer continued to reboot itself. After spending a considerable amount of time on the phone with your technician, the decision was made to send it back to you for testing. Let me note that I originally paid for the combo to be tested before shipped.

Weeks later your technician called me back saying that the motherboard had passed his testing. He suggested it may be my case. I purchased one of yours and the product was shipped back to me at my cost. That is three times I have paid for shipping now as well as a new case.

Finally I received what is now a barebones kit. I then installed everything and within a day noticed the same issues of rebooting. Again additional time was spent with your technician to resolve this. He then confirmed the problem via the telephone and again I shipped your product back to you. Weeks later a confirmation came that the processor had issues. Let me reiterate that I originally paid for testing. Also I have again paid for shipping.

A swap was then made by your company and a new combo was sent to me. I noticed a note in the box informing me that you needed the manual and disk that came with the original combo, something I had failed to include. Your note said that if I sent these back you would pay for this most recent shipping. You are so generous.

Now two weeks later, this new combo has died. Saturday morning I found that my computer will not progress through the initial BIOS posts and load XP, another hardware failure. Let me comment that I am a senior-level programmer with over a decade of experience. Yes, it is hardware failure.

This is unacceptable. I am returning your product and demanding my money back for the combo; however I will keep your case, as it was a separate order. Also I would like to keep the initial memory that I purchased.

I feel your business practices are irresponsible and unprofessional. I am posting this letter to the www.pricewatch.com review section to warn others about how you have treated me as a customer. I am also considering submitting a formal complaint to the Better Business Bureau.

Call me with a confirmation when my credit card has been credited. I am shipping the combo to you tomorrow, Tuesday Jan 3rd, 2005.

I ordered a Athlon XP 3200 400mhz processor. I was hesitant to do so based on some of the ratings. The packaging really does leave something to be desired as it is packed in a bubble envelope wrapped in foam in an anti-static bag (60cents postage). It really should be in a box which really wouldn't cost more. Having said that, the processor works great. For the first week I had nothing but blue screens and Prime95 errors, but I kept working on my system to find that the Power supply voltages (via Motherboard Monitor 5) and memory were not up to snuff and were causing the problems. I changed out my memory and upped the processor voltages in the BIOS and viola, works like a charm (ran Prime95 for 8 hours with no problems). Shipping was fast from them to TN (5 days). I paid $120 for the processor and 3 year warranty vs. $200 for retail. Most OEMs only have a 30 day warranty with additional warranties being very expensive. All in all, I am satisified.

I received most of my order quickly, and it is working ok, but one item was not shipped, and is not checked off on the packing list as being packed. I have tried to contact the company 4 times so far, no answer.

I recently purchased a motherboard CPU combo from this store, this is my second purchase of a combo from here. The main thing that attracted me to this store was the price. Second, it was one of the few places that actually assembles the motherboard and CPU. It's easy enough, but I prefer to just avoid the potential headache. In any case, the delivery was slow, but free. So I can't complain. The package was heavy, it could have been a lot more otherwise. In any case, it was on time (5-7 days +assembly and testing +processing).

As for functionality, the product worked just as expected, and was exactly what I ordered. Everything was assembled correctly. I never had to call customer service. My advice to those of you who order assembled systems from this site: Always pay the extra $14 to get it tested! I cannot stress this enough. If something isn't going to work, they'll mess with it until it's working, and break it in for a day. If you don't do this, you could be dealing with sending things back later.

Hey, everything has a defect rate. So far, I've had no problems with this site. Good prices, good options, free shipping. I have no complaints.

I found this site via Google Shopping, and am grateful that Google provided me with the sipping information before I went to the site.
At the site, I paid for the item before being given shipping information. This would normally be a deal-breaker for me (but I already knew the shipping cost from Google).
In the end, the shipping was reasonable and accurate to what I had expected.

I've purchased two computers from SMK Superstore since 2002. My first one (bought around 2002) has been serving as a dedicated (always on) Server ever since, and has never died. It still runs very well. My second computer was purchased in December 2006, and recently suffered a motherboard failure due to problems with heating. (It was stored in a very small area in my family room.) This computer was subjected to severe heat and cold, and a lot of power outages, dirty lines, and a lot of power spikes, and due to the fact that it was an over performing MythTV server and client, I'm surprised it lasted this long, after all that it's been through. Today I ordered my third and fourth computers from SMK Superstore. I researched the pricing beforehand, and to be quite honest, I couldn't find a better deal, or an equal competitor, or even such a great barebones retailer anywhere else on the net. I am quite technically savvy (network admin / programmer / virtualization wiz) and to be honest, SMK Superstore is a dream come true for all of my technical projects. Thank you guys for existing to satisfy my computing dreams!

I bought a 3200xp for 107 on 9/12/04. I didn't pay for any extra shipping, and it arrived on 9/15/04 (we are both in CA). The CPU came in an anti-static bag in a padded envelope. It was perfectly undamaged. Everyone here must have had MUCH different experiences than I did. I saved $80 from every other site on this cpu and it was just fine. I'll definitely be buying from them next time.

I ordered a new Western Digital Harddrive on January 6th. It arrived 9 days later on the 15th, in non-working order. The drive made a clicking sound at startup and couldn't be read by my computer.

I shipped the drive back the next day. It was received by SMK on the 22nd of January. I was never sent an email or notification that it was being processed.

I was never refunded for the return, and had to call in three weeks later on February 11th. After calling they acknowledged the return was received, and processed the return. However, I was only partially refunded.

I lost shipping, paid for extra shipping for the return, and paid 15% for restocking a broken part.

End result: I paid $27.24 to a bad company for nothing.

I previously built a computer for myself using your bare bones system. I am happy to see that your easy to use website has not changed at all in the year since I bought the last one. When I was asked to build a new PC for a family member, I went here first because of my previous satisfaction. Your site has the same good properties it did before, and made it easy to see exactly what had to be included for the motherboard. I am looking forward to completing the case that you will build for me, and I will come back to your company first when it is time to build another PC.

I purchased a Barton 2500 using PriceWatch to find a good price. The Chip came with a CHUNK missing from the core. I was amazed someone had put a "warranty void if removed" sticker on it, sealed it in antistatic plastic and mailed it out. The chunk was so big it was obvious through the grey plastic. RMAed it and got very poor service as well as having to pay $6.50 more now to send it back insured and delivery confirmation. Over a month since my initial order and I finally get the replacement. The chip I got back was NOT a barton 2500 but is a Thoroughbred 2600 ALSO having a chipped core. I wish I'd read the reviews here of others with similar experiences first as I see I'm not alone. I will NEVER order anything from them or their related e-tailers and I hope no one else reading this has to go through this BS. I will be contacting my CC company and will not be wasting anymore money on return shipping, throwing good money after bad. These people should be investigated. I have a hunch they "pad" their ratings here and on pricewatch as well.

Edit:

8 days since they have had my second RMA'd CPU in their posession and no e-mail response or refund. Just so everone knows, found on the Better Business website many company's that all have the SAME mailing address and are all the same scam outfit.

Edit: 10/28/04

Final entry (promise) Recieved my refund for full price and 8 of the 13 I spent on return shipping, no 15% restocking fee. This was after many somewhat snide comments in my MANY e-mails but at least I have a resolution (45 days later)and know which company's never to order from.

OK I'm breaking my promise sice I've read their response, sorry but...

Both CPU's were sent out to me chipped, I'm a pro and wouldn't ever bother installing a chipped chip lol. I sent both back in their unopened heat sealed grey poly bags.

Liars as well it seems.

SMK took a whole 4 days to put the parts for my order in a box and get it out the door! There was no assembly or testing required -- just parts and it took 4 days.

Then the mobo combo included the wrong cooling fan! If I wanted to get the wrong parts in my order I'd order the parts separately -- the point of ordering a combo is that all the parts are supposed to work TOGETHER.

I dont recommend ordering from SMK.

One gets what one pays for. I ordered an AMD Athlon 3000+ 333MHz processor on August 2 from SMK because it had the lowest price that I could find. I paid an extra $8 or so for a shipping option that would allow me to get it in 4-6 buisness days instead of 9-12 and have "online order tracking". For a shipping total of $12.49, they sent the processor wrapped in a static bag within a folded piece of egg-crate foam in a padded mailing envelope. The postage on the envelope read $0.79 for First Class Mail shipping. Forget about tracking with the USPS - it's terrible. When I was installing the processor, it was a little tough to get it to fit, but once installed it worked perfectly and has since.

All in all I was able to get my processor for $112.49 in a week and in reasonably good condition. I would have liked to have had my order ship in a box via USPS Priority, but one simply can not beat their prices.

Recently ordered parts from 5 different suppliers and this one was ordered first, cost the most, and was delivered the last. I'm not thuroughly impressed with their service or delivery method, but it got here, finally. Prices were good on some things, but over-priced on others, it seems par for the course anymore for all companies though. Buy carefully and check your prices and delivery methods.

As an update - the parts arrived and the AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor I ordered had several pins bent and would not fit into the ZIF socket. I took a chance and bent them myself and it works like a charm. Very fast processor, though a bit hot - like most AMD chips... so get a good heatsink and use a proper amount of thermal grease. The store remains the same as before.
