I have experienced increasing amount of
neck pain for the past two years and during this time have sort advice from the spine consultants at Spire Gatwick Park, The Horder Clinic and Spire Bushy Park. The 3 consultants advice was much the same, you have arthritis and spinal stenosis. There is no possibility of surgical treatment and we will refer you to a pain specialist, whose advised cortisone injections and increasing amounts of pain killers including morphine sulphate and BuTrans (opiate patches) none of which had much effect.

I then got to hear of Mr Akmal. His advice was to try one more injection (making 5 in total) and explained has reservations about surgery. I am now 87 years of age with a pacemaker which normally prevents MRI scans necessary for any surgery. Mr Akmal was able to find a hospital who would undertake an MRI scan (St Bart's) and result a C5/6 foraminotomy was diagnosed as the best surgical approach.

The operation was carried out in September 2017 and the result has been most successful. I would estimate that the pain I an now experiencing is about on quarter of that five months ago and the amount of pain killers I take is also about one quarter, only paracetamol and ibroprofen (no opiates).

Mr Akmal advised that residual pain is likely to further decrease for one year or even 18 months after surgery.

In October 2016 I was treated by Mr. Mo Akmal at the Hospital of St. John & St. Elizabeth for a de-compression of the spine. From the outset Mr. Akmal was reassuring and the outcome of the operation fully justified his confidence. The operation was pain-free and although I had to learn to walk again (!) this was quickly rectified by some excellent follow-up physiotherapy. There was an instant improvement in my body movement and I have subsequently experienced no adverse after-effects.

I cannot too highly recommend Mr. Akmal’s procedure.

I am a Canadian and have been suffering with back pain for many years, having had injections, physio, acupuncture, pain meds all with no long term relief. It came to a point where I was unable to resume normal activities as well as work and was looking for the best surgeon and unit to help me get my life back, regardless of the location. I am very glad to report that Dr. Akmal and the entire caring and professional Spinal Unit team did just that. I am now on week 3 recovering from spinal fusion surgery. I was standing and walking 2 hours post surgery, even walked to the office from the hotel 2 days after surgery. Week 3, I no longer have any back or nerve pain and my numbness in my leg is completely gone. A true miracle, as my mother would say!

From the rapid responses and support while I was abroad, to the pre-op support and ensuring I have all details and answering every possible question I had, to the post op support and physio. The unit is a true one stop shop for anyone having to have surgery and all with the best quality professionals and so caring. You will part of the family there. I am forever grateful and would recommend Dr. Akmal, and the entire team to anyone who is having back issues. They will not push or rush for surgery as their objective is to truly provide a personalize treatment for each patient, with surgery as a last option. If you do have surgery, they are so advanced in their technique that you can resume a much faster recovery. Even the best surgeons in New York were anticipating a 3-6 month recovery for me...I feel truly blessed to be able to go home and show my husband and kids that they have their mummy back :-)

I had a disc bulge (L3-L4/, L4-L5) about 5 years ago and had to do spinal decompression using the IDD machine at least twice a year in both the US and UK respectively. This was helpful but didn’t completely eliminate the pain. I walked up to the London Spine Unit at the Harley Street Hospital where I met Dr Mo Akmal and that marked a turning point in my lumbar back episode.

He introduced me to a novel technique- Laser Discectomy- a laser disc surgery. Dr. Akmal is the most professional, erudite and humane Doctor I’ve met in recent times. His confidence, care and compassion boosted my moral. Dr Akmal emits positive energy and looks at bright side of life. These virtues facilitated my decision to carry on with the procedure. In less than 45 minutes on my scheduled date I was done. All phobia gone. No pains, no relapse. I’m up & confident again leading my life with joy. Kudos to Dr Akmal and the great team at the London Spine Unit. I have no reservations whatsoever in recommending anyone or family that requires this treatment as they stand to benefit greatly.

I am a generally fit and healthy 31 year old, but when I first met Dr Akmal, I was in a bad way. I had been in increasingly bad pain for five months, and had gotten to the point where I was walking with a stick and unable to stand straight. An MRI scan showed the culprit was a severely slipped disc pressing on the sciatic nerve, and Dr Akmal advised that injections and laser surgery were unlikely to fix it. He advised minimally invasive lumbar decompression surgery, and I was operated on two weeks later. It was a day procedure, and I was able to stand up straight only a few hours after the surgery. 8 weeks later, I am walking and moving normally and have had very little pain, even immediately after the operation. I have my life back and couldn't be more grateful.

I have had increasingly severe neck and arm symptoms which, over the last two years have started to effect my work and personal life. As a fellow medic, I was reluctant to undergo any invasive procedure, well aware of potential complications. However.... I have had an amazing result from the nerve injection procedure carried out by Mr Akmal. It has been truly transformative. Throughout the journey, I have had full confidence in Mr Akmal and his team, including his fantastic anaesthetist. I would not hesitate to recommend him to my friends and family. He is one of the most accomplished and confidence-inspiring clinicians I have had occasion to meet.

I have been suffering from lower back pain for the past 10 years,of which Ive had three caudal epidural injections which did help.
Over the past two years the pain got much worst, especially in my left thigh and foot. This affected my personal life in a big way including lots of sleepness nights.After my last consultation in June, upon reviewing MRI report, I was again offered operation as that's the only solution that would elevate my pain and suffering. This time I gladly accepted.

Mr Mo Akmal performed my operation , what a great job he did, he is an amazing spinal consultant, so friendly and caring to his patients, he makes his patients feels at ease and he takes his time and explained everything prior and after.
I am now free of pain since the day of my procedure and now living a full and healthy life again. I'd like to thank Mr Akmal and his team for a job well done.

I was introduced to Mr Mo Akmal by a friend who had been treated by him for sciatica. His operation on my spine was a total success. My pain had been absolutely debilitating: I was unable to stand up, walking was difficult. The relief after the procedure was immediate. Since then I've been able to stand and walk without difficulty. Mr Akmal from the outset was informative and reassuring. My debt to him is immense.

I was under the care of Mr Akmal and the team at the Spine Unit from Jan 2013 to September 2016. I had to turn to private practice as the NHS did not regard my symptoms as important enough to look any further beyond "just keep taking the drugs", and it was the best thing I ever did. My journey to spinal health has taken me through 2 lumbar spine injections, a discectomy and decompression (L4/L5), a further 2 lumbar spine injections, a spinal fusion (screws, rods, a cage... the works), plus another 2 SI joint injections.
At every stage, Mr Akmal and Dr Lok made me feel listened to and even when I began to dispair that I would never be pain free, would reassure me that they would continue to help find the source of my pain.
The options were always explained to me in great detail, all of my questions were answered, and my concerns taken into consideration. I never felt dismissed or that my questions were silly. Mr Akmal has a cautious approach and explores less invasive procedures before considering surgery. I appreciated this greatly as the surgical option that I ultimately had, was quite a serious one and I went in knowing that everything else had been tried first.
I hope to not have to see Mr Akmal and the team again - in the nicest possible way - but if it becomes a necessity, I know I will be in good hands.

I had a herniated disc which by 2013 was putting so much pressure on my spinal cord that after a series of steroid injections Mo Akmal decided we had to opt for a discectomy in March 2014. I liked the fact that he did not resort to operating on me immediately and that he wanted to see whether alternative treatments might do the trick, but by the time we moved to having the discectomy I was crawling around and on very heavy pain killers. The operation was a complete success although I am sure that doing all the right physio and pilates afterwards made a big difference to my eventual recovery (I reckon it took me 2 years to get back to 98%). You never get back to 100% after a condition like this because your brain will always want to protect a part of your body which has become vulnerable and so there will always be that fear of doing stuff which might set you back. The answer is to do the right stuf: get a standing desk; walk lots; do daily physio and control your weight. I have been pain free for the last 2 1/2 years. I never thought I would be. Mo (who I researched carefully before committing to him) is first rate and his team is lovely.

Prior to my surgery I had experienced back pain for close to ten years, getting progressively worse, affecting my hips and legs too. Through swimming, massages and heat patches I coped on a day to day basis, but with two young children, getting tired of being in pain and how that affects you plus a desire to stay active I contacted Mr Akmal.
My initial consultation and discussion of my MRI scan was very professional and thorough. At no stage did I feel talked into a procedure and recommendations felt personal to my situation. My husband and I left feeling confident with the planned treatment and team.
I had three spinal injections prior to major lumbar spinal surgery. Whilst I underwent the spinal injections with Mr Akmal, I also saw a physio on a weekly basis, creating a daily routine of exercises to prepare me for spinal surgery.
After six months of treatment and several appointments with Mr Akmal, discussing the various options available, I underwent surgery. Although nervous, I felt very informed and reassured that this was the right solution for me. I have never regretted this decision.
Although I spent a few extra days at the hospital than expected - but with fantastic nurses and a physio team! - the recovery has been pretty smooth, not fast, and it takes great daily effort!
My quality of life has increased tremendously, not having my children say "Be careful, mum has a bad back" is wonderful and enjoying a long haul flight or sleeping in a different bed on holiday instead of fearing it has been life changing.
I cannot recommend Mr Akmal and his team enough.

I believe that Mr Mo Akmal is one of the best spine surgeons in the U.K. Anyone who suffers from back problems should see Mr Akmal and he would be able to provide you with the best solution.

Recommended to the Spine Unit by my local surgery after suffering for weeks and even months extreme severe pain in my hip and down my leg and foot. The pain was excrutiating. Finally I made an appointment for a consultation with Mr. Akmal for which I will be eternally grateful.

At my first meeting with Mr. Akmal I was absolutely adamant that I wanted an operation on my back to be sure of a permanent cure and definitive solution regarding my disc bulge which was causing severe stenosis.

Mr. Akmal listened patiently. At the end of my tirade Mr. Akmal explained
that an operation on the back wasn't appropriate or necessary and could even make matters worse. He listened carefully and then patiently explained and advised other more appropriate ways forward. This included lumbar decompression surgery on my spine and a series of
injections at 2-4 week intervals.

I am so happy to say, thanks to Mr. Akmal, I have my life back on track
and can resume most of my previous physical activities.

It gives me pleasure to highly recommend Mr. Akmal for consultation, advice and all problems and treatments concerning back problems.

My thanks to Mr. Akmal on the treatment and outcome that I have been so fortunate to receive.

I had been suffering from sciatica for 8 years. I saw multiple physio therapists, had acupuncture, an injection and chiropractic therapy and still didn’t feel better at all.

I was worried about having surgery at first because I am still young however Dr Mo Akmal reassured me that the lumbar Discectomy is a simply key hole surgery with minimal invasion into the lower back making it a very safe procedure.

I felt immediate pain relief and am able to live normally and am extremely grateful for Dr Akmal and his team. I was discharged from the clinic on the same day and was able to walk and take public transport back home with no difficulty.

I would highly recommend anyone thinking of doing lower back surgery to see Dr Akmal. Thank you very much Dr Akmal and to your team.

After a few years of differing diagnosis and treatment solutions from a number of doctors and surgeons I was finally relieved to be in the hands of Mo Akmal and his colleagues.
Although the initial operation did not fix all my issues, which may have been disguised by multiple sources of pain, I think that I am on a good road to recovery.
The msot important issue, apart from the proven skills of the team, had been the clarity of the analysis, the options available and finally trusted recommendations.

Initial cortisone injection treatment was good but after a year needed more invasive disc shaving, which proved very successful for some years sincl. Mo and team are very good.

After suffering years of painful back, I was recommended Mr. Mo Akmal. After an initial consultation, I had a short procedure. Mr. Akmal said the pain can return after 6 months. 5 years down the line, I am still pain free! Thank you Mr. Akmal.

Dr. Mo Akmal is one of the best consultants who has an excellent diagnosis. I was on crutches but he motivated me alot and helped me to rehabilitate. I had a disk prolapse in L5-S1 region and he gave me spinal injection which helped. I recommend very highly about his diagnosis and treatment.
